چکیده

Hands-on experiences are indispensable to train IT operators. However, it is often difficult to conduct hands-on practices in many locations due to lack of resources such as PCs and network equipments. The cost of gathering lecturers and participants at one hands-on site is another possible problem in this situation. Utilization of remotely located handson environment is one of the solution to solve these problems. StarBED is a testbed facility for conducting network experiments. Installation of any OSes, adjusting the network topologies according to the requirements can be easily realized utilizing StarBED and SpringOS. A software suite, SpringOS, was developed exclusively for automating the experiment setups in StarBED. This facility could be used to address the problems of lack of resources and high cost for traveling. This research conducted a region-wide remote hands-on workshop utilizing the StarBED inviting 42 participants from 10 Asian countries. The workshop was designed so that the remote participants do not have to travel to single place, and prepare same specification PCs at each site. Through the collected data and feedback, the proposed workshop model was proved to be feasible and effective. This paper describes the requirements and approaches for region-wide remote hands-on workshop utilizing StarBED for building target hands-on environment. As the contents of the conducted workshop could be applied to the general IT human resource development programs, this paper could Permission to make digital or hard copies of all or part of this work for personal or classroom use is granted without fee provided that copies are not made or distributed for profit or commercial advantage and that copies bear this notice and the full citation on the first page. Realistic Simulation of Internet

The Internet is a complex collection of various nodes which run independently. The hardware and software of nodes are quite diverse and these elements make the complexity of the Internet. It is difficult to model these behaviors, so we proposed and implemented StarBED, a large-scale testbed using general PCs and switches. Thus we created an environment for experiment using realistic nodes and s...

StarBED and SpringOS Architectures and Their Performance

StarBED is a network testbed begun in 2002 focused on running actual program code for software and hardware implementations. As hardware technologies develops, its facilities such as PCs and network equipments have been updated and we additionally developed SpringOS, a software support suite consisting of numerous program modules. The performance of StarBED and SpringOS increases as their equip...

WLAN Emulation on StarBED

In this paper we present the Wireless LAN (WLAN) emulator that we design to run on StarBED, the large scale network experiment environment of the Hokuriku Research Centre in Ishikawa, Japan. As WLANs start to spread on an ever wider scale, the need to investigate application deployment on WLANs has become stringent. We develop an emulation environment since it allows using in experiments the re...

Multi-hop Wireless Network Emulation on StarBED

In this paper, we present an architecture to emulate multihop wireless networks on StarBED, a wired-network testbed at Hokuriku Research Center of NICT, Japan. The architecture uses a distributed approach, and it can effectively emulate in real time the properties of WLAN contention-based media access mechanism.

Emulating over 10K AS topology with massive VM multiplexing

New technologies that will be introduced to the Internet should be practically tested for effectiveness and for side effects. A realistic environment that simulates the Internet is needed to experimentally test such technologies, which will be widely deployed on the Internet. To support experimentation in a realistic, Internet-like environment, we are now trying to construct an Internet on a te...
